Americans emerge victorious in battle with RiverKings

Posted by: Sabrbug on Feb 06, 2010 CHL News
The Americans earned their two points tonight in a 5-4 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings in a physical battle and penalty-ridden contest. The win is Allen's thirtieth and gives the expansion club a 30-10-3 record (63 points).

After Allen beat Mississippi 3-2 Tuesday, the RiverKings and Americans faced off in Texas three days later, and the game started in a similar fashion.

Mississippi jumped out to an early lead again with a goal from Darrell Stoddard at 12:24 of the first, but the Americans struck back with two quick tallies less than one minute later. Nathan O'Nabigon and Bruce Graham scored 29 seconds apart. Mississippi tied it at two on the power play before the period ended when Darrell Stoddard put one away on a two-on-one rush.

The second period was a whirlwind of penalties and goals. Four minutes in, Tyler Wooddisse checked Bobby Chaumont into the boards. The check resulted in an eruption of chaos on the ice. Mississippi's Matt Summers pulled Wooddisse into a tussle, while American Mike Salekin exchanged punches with RiverKing David Simoes. All four players received game misconducts when all was said and done.

With both benches short, the clubs got back to playing hockey. Bruce Graham scored his second goal of the night at 6:43, and, then, Mississippi evened the score at three when Louis Dumont's wrister got past Chris Whitley at 9:47. The Americans responded with a goal from Nino Musitelli about a minute later to regain the lead. The Americans fought through penalties and finished the period with five successful penalty kills and a 4-3 lead.

Allen started the final frame with fresh ice on the power play. The rested team came out strong and increased their lead to two goals for the first time this evening. Defenseman Ryan Fairbarn scored from the top of the point after 52 seconds. The teams went scoreless until Stoddard scored his third goal of the night on the power play at 14:29 to bring the score to 5-4. The Americans refused to let Mississippi light the lamp again and ended the game successfully killing off the twelfth power play for the RiverKings.

The teams had a combined 109 penalty minutes, the most of an any Americans contest this season.

Chris Whitley made 24 saves tonight.
