 The Tulsa Oilers overcame a two-goal third period deficit and beat the Missouri Mavericks 3-2 in a shootout Friday night at Independence Events Center.
Goaltender Trevor Cann stopped 40 shots for the Oilers, and Troy Riddle and T.J. Caig each buried third period goals to move the Oilers and Mavericks into a fifth place tie in the Northern Conference. Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa stopped 33 of 35 shots and the Mavericks lost just their second game in a shootout this season (7-2).
The newest forward to the Mavericks' roster Toby Lafrance gave the home team a 1-0 lead on his first shot in a Mavericks' uniform. Brett Hammond centered the puck to Lafrance who wristed a shot over the glove of Cann. The goal came at the 7:29 mark of the opening period and proved to be the only goal in the first. Missouri controlled much of the pace in the first 20 minutes and had 13 shots on goal compared to seven for the Oilers.
The Mavericks again controlled much of the possession in the second period and reeled off 17 shots in the middle frame. Sirota notched his 15th goal of the season with just three seconds remaining in the period. The Mavericks rookie leader intercepted a pass in the Mavericks defensive zone, skated away from the defense, and buried a wrister on the final shot of the period.
It was all Tulsa in the third period. Troy Riddle tallied his ninth goal of the season when he buried a rebound past the right leg pad of Festa. He was assisted by Jake Riddle and the goal cut the lead to 2-1 with a little over 13 minutes remaining in regulation. For the second time in as many games, the Mavericks allowed a goal in the final two minutes of regulation that tied the game for their opponent. Caig buried a goal with the extra attacker at the 18:59 mark when the puck took an awkward bounce off the corner to the right of Festa and landed right on the tape of Caig who lifted a backhand into the net.
The teams remained tied through the overtime period to force the shootout. Missouri was unable to score on their first three chances until Jordan Foreman scored a goal between the legs of Cann to tie the shootout at one. Aaron Davis was the hero when he scored in the fifth and final round of the shootout.
The Oilers continued the trend of the road team winning. In all four games this season between the Mavericks and Oilers, the road team has won.
The Mavericks and Oilers will square off again Saturday night at Independence Events Center.
