 Storm a Rolling In
The Wichita Thunder are on a season-long three-game win streak and are easily playing their best hockey of the season. The recent trades the Thunder made have strengthened the offense as Paul Kelly has 11 points (4-7=11) in 11 games since being acquired from Odessa and Steve Makway has 10 points (3-7=10) in 13 games since coming over from Mississippi. Wichita has won four straight games on the road outscoring their opponent 17-9. Scott Campbell has been in net for all four wins making 146 saves on 155 shots (.942 save percentage).
The rookie netminder was named the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week for his 3-0 week. Wichita will look to get the monkey off their back in the new INTRUST Bank Arena on Wednesday when they host the Colorado Eagles. Wichita is 0-13-2 in their last 15 home games.
Oil Prices Up
The task at hand was clear for the visiting Tulsa Oilers as they traveled to Missouri to play the Mavericks in a pair of games last weekend and that was to come up with as many points as possible versus the team they are competing with for the fifth and final Northern Conference playoff spot. The Oilers earned the max winning each game, 3-2 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday. Goaltender Trevor Cann made 77 saves on 81 shots (.951). The two victories move the Oilers past the Mavs for the fifth spot in the North with 46 points, two more than Missouri. Tulsa will host Colorado on Tuesday at the BOK Center.
Early Action - Bucks Look to End the Corpus Christi Curse
The Laredo Bucks (21-15-8) will host their annual Kid's Day Game on Tuesday morning with a special 11:00 AM (CST) face-off versus the Corpus Christi IceRays (19-20-6). It will be the 12th of 14 meetings in the season series between the two rivals and the Rays have been the benefactor during the previous contests winning eight of the 11 games including six straight. Corpus Christi has shutout the Bucks in two of their last three meetings. Half of rookie Ryan Garbutt's goal total this season has come in the games versus Laredo as he has tallied eight of his 16 goals including two game winners. BY THE NUMBERS
5-0-2- The Rapid City Rush's record on their recently completed season-long seven-game road trip. The Rush started the trip dropping back-to-back shootout games in Mississippi and then followed that up with wins in Wichita, Missouri and a three-game sweep in Arizona. The Rush are 16-4-3 away from home this year and 11-0-2 in their last 13 road contest. Rapid City is four points clear of the Colorado Eagles for first place in the Northern Conference.
15- The number of seconds remaining in the game when Texas' Jordan Cameron broke a two-all tie in the Brahmas 3-2 win at Bossier-Shreveport. It was the all-stars 16th goal and third game winner this season. Cameron now has goals in six straight games (the third longest goal streak in the CHL this season).
4:10- The amount of time, in the first period of Saturday's 9-4 win over the Colorado Eagles, that it took Odessa's Mike Ramsay to net a hat trick. It was his second hat trick of the season and it moved him to second in the CHL with 26 goals. All three of his goals came on the PP giving him a league-leading 14 on the season. Ramsay's teammate, Sebastien Thinel, tied the high-mark for assists in a single game with five. Ramsay rattled off 12 shots on goal in Friday's game marking the season-high in the CHL.
12-0- The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs record when they do not allow a power play goal. The 'Bugs penalty kill is last in the league killing 80.4% of their shorthanded chances.
6-12-5- The Arizona Sundogs record in one-goal games dropping a CHL-high 17 games by one goal. Each of the Sundogs last seven games have been decided by just one score.
SLAP SHOTS
-Bossier-Shreveport's Travis Clayton became the first CHL player to play in 800 CHL games on Friday night in the Mudbugs loss to Clayton's old team, the Wichita Thunder.
-Arizona's Marc Belanger has scored goals in five straight games and has the league's longest active point streak at 10 games. Over that stretch, Belanger has scored seven goals with 10 assists.
-Odessa's 5-3 loss to Colorado on February 5 was their first regulation loss in close to a month. The Jacks had earned a point in 11 straight games going 10-0-1 over that stretch. Their last regulation loss came in Mississippi on January 8.
-After winning five straight games, the streaky Mississippi RiverKings have now lost four consecutive games (0-3-1) and are one point behind the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs for the third spot in the Northern Conference. The 'Kings and 'Bugs will meet on Tuesday night in Mississippi with Bossier-Shreveport leading the season series with five wins in seven games.
-Steve Haddon scored twice on the Eagles recent two game trip to Odessa giving him 17 goals on the season, a new career high. Last season, the forward scored a then career-high 16 goals in 64 games but with 21games remaining in the 2009-10 season he has already reached his career mark.
