It’s almost here. After months and months of waiting, the Mudbugs are about to get back on the ice.
The other night I was watching a game on tv with my niece. She cheered when I cheered, but the whole concept of the game was lost on her. When she started asking me “why they did that” or “what’s that called” I could only stare at her.
I’ve never claimed to be an expert on hockey. Hell, not even close. When I told her I didn’t know she asked “why do you watch it if you don’t know anything about it.” I was stunned. It reminded me of another conversation I had with someone when I first started watching the Mudbugs. He wanted to know how I could write about a team I knew nothing about.
The first time that was asked of me I answered back “because I enjoy it.” I told the same thing to my niece. She was satisfied and we finished watching the game until her bed time.
Today, a friend was asking about the games. He wanted to know when I started watching, where it was played, how long the games last, how often they play, etc., etc. I invited him along to a game and he said he probably wouldn’t enjoy it because he knows nothing about it.
Here was my chance. I don’t feel like I have to explain myself to anyone or make excuses about anything, but I had to pass on my experience.
I told him how, when the lights go down and that music starts, your heart rate jumps. As you and all the fans around you are standing, waiting for the players to come out, you can feel the excitement, feel the energy go through your body. As the guys skate out and the crowd roars with appreciation, your whole being is alive. Chill bumps form from and you have no idea why. You don’t care that you know nothing about the game, or that your hockey IQ is limited. All you care about is that feeling. The feeling that something great is about to happen and you are right in the middle of it.
That, I told him, was reason enough to go.
I may not know exactly what is happening on the ice, why they did that play, or why that player looks like he is auditioning for “Stars On Ice.” What I do know, and what matters to me, is that this game excites me. And that, my friends, is all the reason I need.
